About MIT

The MIT Mission

Continually offering and supplying niche market technology products by striving to keep at the forefront of development innovations and supply lines

MIT History

Margie Hengstberger started the company in 1993 – 25 years ago – commercialising the Goldilux light meter range, a wholly South African developed and internationally recognised instrument range for light and radiation measurement. To supplement the R & D market demand in the scientific niche for sensors and optics as well as other light and radiation instrumentation MIT got the representation of brands ready to enter the SA markets at the time. In addition to being recognised as manufacturers MIT are also globally listed as the sole SA representatives of OptoSigma, Photo Research, Labsphere, CI-Systems as well as Andor and Oriel Instruments (now Newport). The late Dr Maurice McDowell joined as Managing Director. He is recognised in South Africa as one of the most outstanding physicist in optics and photonics and is credited with designing some of the most successful optical systems for defence and aerospace.

MIT moved to the new premises on the CSIR campus with the current management team focussing on the ever changing market demands and technology innovation.

The company has always had close associations with globally recognised specialists in the fields of physics and measurements – such as Prof Wilhelm Leuschner and Dr Franz Hengstberger – who was the president of the International Commission on Illumination headquartered in Vienna.

The company has BEE Level 2 certification.
